What is a Split Air Conditioning System?

A split air conditioning system, as the name suggests, splits the air conditioning unit into two parts which are connected by copper piping and electrical wiring. Refrigerant is then dispersed through the copper pipes to generate either hot or cold air. The two principal parts of an air conditioning split system are:
  • External Heat Exchanger Cabinet – this part of the split system is located outside, near the exterior wall of the room that is to be cooled or heated. The cabinet houses an inverter compressor, condenser coil and the expansion coil or capillary tubing.
  • Interior Air Conditioning Unit – this part of the system is housed within a sleek and stylish cabinet and usually mounted on a wall close to the ceiling. This part of the system contains the cooling coil, a blower and an air filter.
Split air conditioning can be controlled from a handheld remote or a central command point. This delivers quick and accurate temperature, control, fan speed, 24-hour timing and sometimes also airflow direction. The unit has outlet air grilles that can be positioned in a particular direction or swing from side to side to ensure air is evenly distributed through the room. Once the set conditions are reached, the inverter compressor technology changes the mode to conserve energy that would be lost from starting and stopping the unit.

Why Choose Split Air Conditioning?

Split air conditioning systems offer an ideal way to distribute clean, comfortable air around your home or office. In fact, opting for split air conditioning can be beneficial for a number of reasons:

Quiet

split systems have an efficient design that is quiet in operation as the noisiest parts of the system, the compressor and fan, are conveniently placed in the outdoor unit.

Simple

the process of installing a split system is relatively straightforward without the need for a network to be created through the ceiling as for a ducted system.

Efficient

split systems are able to sense temperature and humidity to help limit maximum peaks of electrical power.

Cost-Effective

while the unit and installation cost of split air conditioning is higher than a window unit, cost savings over time due makes it extremely cost-efficient.

Expandable

you can expand a split system into a multi-split system, creating additional air outlets for other rooms.
To realise the many benefits, however, you need to choose the right system for the space and to ensure it is installed and maintained by a qualified engineer.

How is Split Air Conditioning Installed?

As we’ve touched on, a split air conditioning system should be installed by a qualified and experienced technician. The exact installation process will vary depending on the model and manufacturing requirements. However, the basic split air conditioning installation process follows these eight steps:

Choose location

deciding on the right location for the internal and external unit is fundamental. It needs to be away from direct heat and have open space around it.

Secure mounting plate

once the perfect location and height have been determined, a mounting plate is firmly secured to the interior wall.

Make connections

a hole is made above the mounting plate and pipes are connected from the inside to the outside unit.

Place indoor unit

the indoor unit is connected to the mounting plate in preparation for the outside unit to be set up.

Prepare ground

the ground underneath the outdoor unit is levelled out and the exact position decided, ensuring the unit sits high enough to prevent any damage from the elements.

Place outdoor unit

the outdoor unit is fixed firmly in place and wires from the indoor unit are securely connected.

Finishing touches

air is bled from the outdoor unit, pipework is secured and any holes are filled up before the air conditioning system is ready for use.

How to Choose the Right Split System?

When it comes to split air conditioning, choosing the right system for your needs is fundamental. However, there are lots of variables to consider. While wall mounted split system air conditioners are the most common choice, you can also opt for a floor-standing console, under ceiling, ceiling cassette or bulkhead system. You also have the choice of reverse-cycle split systems to ensure you can both cool and heat the space in question. Regardless of the system you choose, however, what you need the most is for it to be cost-effective and energy-efficient. This is why it’s vital to consult a specialist technician instead of going it alone. The last thing you want to do is waste money on a system that won’t operate efficiently, keep you comfortable, or will cost you more than necessary.

To help you choose a split system, we can visit your home or office, analyse the space, take note of your requirements and put forward recommendations. We work with well-known brands such as Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Actron, Fujitsu and Temperzone to ensure you get a reliable, energy-efficient system. TESTIMONIALS

Some feedback from our valued customers

“It is rare to get such perfect customer service in today’s day and age, but I was unbelievable impressed with Eastern Air Conditioning! I contacted them on Friday afternoon for a small domestic job and the staff went out of their way to ensure it was completed before I left for work at 8am on the following Monday. Could not fault the service, quality of work, punctuality and price. I would definitely use them again whenever needed!”

Casey – Cronulla, Sydney

“I have employed the services of Eastern Air Conditioning at our pub since 2018 as our original providers were not meeting our needs. Eastern Air Conditioning have met and gone beyond our expectations, with a great maintenance program, the ability to solve any problem and they will come out at a moment’s notice. Even with the 40+ degree heat waves, they were able to meet our needs. I highly recommend Eastern Air Conditioning above all the many providers I have dealt with over the past 16 years running pubs.”

John – Gregory Hills Hotel, Sydney

“Excellent customer service. Andrew and his team have completed works at our commercial job sites, including the Kings Park Tavern and City Tattersalls Club, Sydney. He is polite, punctual and a great person in general to deal with. I can highly recommend the company based on our first experiences working with them and will be dealing with Andrew and the team in the near future!”

Brent – Clockwork Constructions, Sydney

“Eastern Air Conditioning installed our ducted system as part of our second floor renovation. They were professional, efficient and worked seamlessly with our builders. The end product has made our house comfortable in all seasons. Whatever your air conditioning needs, I would highly recommend Eastern Air Conditioning.”
